I know. If you were on the east coast Easter Sunday evening, it was probably difficult for you to either stay up and watch the latest version (emphasis on the word late) of Verzuz–featuring two of the first families of Gospel: sisters Erica and Tina Campbell of Mary Mary and siblings BeBe and CeCe Winans–or difficult to function Monday morning. Which is why we should all be thankful to the internet for capturing what was one of the greatest installments of the two-year old music “competition.”
The entire evening, hosted by Kevin Fredericks aka KevOnStage, brought back so many memories. Like how the first time I heard BeBe and CeCe was on the radio singing “Lost Without You.” And how, that one year “Addicted Love” climbed all the way to #2 on my old WILL-FM countdown.
And let’s not even speak on the Campbell sisters. Tina and Erica will always have a special place in my heart, from the chokehold “Shackles” had on me when it first came out to the one time I was blessed to appear on their reality show. It was during my Grammys writing stint, and the producers asked that I interview them about that year’s Grammy nom. I was nervous, but Tina and a very pregnant Erica made me feel comfortable.
So yes, this past weekend I was in my personal music heaven, with each duo taking me on trips down memory lane that will walk with me forever.
